This month, as we continue our overview of Blake Prepares for Manufacturing we will review the Skills section. Skills are specific actions that can be taught. As manufacturers ourselves, we believe there are three primary skills which will enable the next generation to win in manufacturing.

1. Measurement: To determine the size (weight or distance) of an object

2. Tool Identification: To select and apply the right tool for a specific task

3. Time Management: To combine your to-do list with your calendar

Would you like to get your kids involved in manufacturing? Start now! Both books by MAKE Publishing, and our newsletters, contain activities designed to engage kids in manufacturing. Further, the world around us is filled with opportunities to learn. Reviewing the contents of your garage, cleaning a car (including the engine compartment), measuring things, and watching home construction are all great ways to begin the journey of education in manufacturing. The key to a successful activity is for kids to ask; “How does that work?”

Welcome to Manufacturing Month (October). Join us! Thanks to the support of Creative Planning Institute and Minnesota Precision Manufacturing Association we have developed a month long program to introduce the next generation to the possibilities within manufacturing.
